About Cheadle Labour and how to get involved

Cheadle Constituency Labour Party campaigns for the interests of the 71,800 people who are eligible to vote to send an MP to Parliament for the Cheadle Constituency, or for local councillors on Stockport Council. We want you to vote Labour!

Cheadle is one of three constituencies (plus a part of a constituency) that make up the borough of Stockport.

Stockport borough is divided into 21 Wards, each with around 10,000 voters who elect three Councillors to run the borough. This gives a total of 63 Stockport councillors.

Labour currently has the largest number of Stockport councillors and runs the council. However, it does not have an overall majority and must negotiate with the other parties to agree plans for the borough. That is why the elections on the 3rd May 2018 were so important for Labour, and David Meller’s win over the Liberal Democrats in Cheadle Hulme North was crucial to Labour continuing to lead the council and make Stockport the best possible place to live and work for EVERYONE.

How can I get involved?

There are lots of different ways to campaign with Cheadle Labour, from delivering leaflets and door-knocking to helping agree local and national policy, running a stall at a community event or fundraising. Why not come to one of our social events? – you will be very welcome. Contact us to let us know how you might help, or to find out more

If you want to…

  • Influence policy making for Labour, come along to our regular meetings on the second Thursday of every month (except August)  7.30 pm at Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church, Ramillies Avenue, Cheadle Hulme, SK8 7AL The Labour Party has an extensive structure for discussing and making policy. At the regular CLP meetings, we discuss aspects of policy at local and national levels and can submit motions to reflect our views at the Stockport, Greater Manchester, regional and national levels. We always send a delegate to the Labour Party Conference where key policy decisions are made.
  • Get access to councillors and MPs: There are many opportunities to meet and discuss politics with councillors and MPs including shadow ministers.
  • Identify and campaign about local issues: Our members are our eyes and ears across the Cheadle constituency and we need you to tell us what is going on and how we can make a difference.
  • Select candidates for elections and campaign for them: The Labour Party has a very open process for members to propose candidates and then vote to select them for elections. Any member can put themselves forward as a candidate. Once we have selected candidates we have a strong team to campaign for them, but it needs the hard work of our members to contact the people of Cheadle and get them to vote Labour.
